Because the western news really do not cover the situation in Mexico (city) very much, here is an update: AMLO revealed yesterday what the plans are going to be for September 15th/16th. At night on September 15th, there is the traditional Grito (a celebration of independence from Spain) in which the president has to do some flag actions and then a one point will shout “¡Viva La Mexico!” and the mass of people gathered around will be shouting back “¡Viva la Mexico!”

So Fox is planning to do that this year. However, the place where it will happen is the Zocalo — right where the AMLO camp is. The plan is therefore to stay with all the tents for the Grito, so the supporters of Fox’s party will not dare to get close. When Fox then screams “¡Viva la Mexico!” everyone will just be quiet. Instead AMLO is also going to hold the Grito (apparently from the stage that is built up) simultaneously and also shout “¡Viva la Mexico” — whereupon the mass will then respond. If it all works out, this should pretty much steal the show from Fox. Doubtlessly pro-Fox TV stations will only film the balcony on which he stands and use microphones that will one catch Fox’s voice and none of the booing around him.
Then at 2-3AM, all the tents will be moved away, so that the military parade will be able to take place in the morning of the 16that around . As soon as the military parade is over, the AMLO activists return in order to prepare for the national democratic convention (expecting up to 1,000,000 delegates) which will take place, as all other things, on the Zocalo, at 3PM that day. The convention will then also decide whether to move the tents back in place or whether this will be the end of the camp.

OK, so far for now. I must say I am amazed as how closely AMLO actions resemble my idea of activist politics. If only we could have something like this in Europe…
